Norwegian Sky was initially built in 1999 by Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven, Germany, and entered service with Norwegian Cruise Line the same year. The ship was initially launched as Sunward before being renamed Norwegian Sky. It has operated a variety of itineraries, including the Bahamas, Caribbean, and Mediterranean, and remains active in the fleet, registered in Nassau, Bahamas. Norwegian Sky underwent major refurbishments in 2019 and 2024.
